POAC Southeast Region

Web Site

Sponsored by Sheila Bennett, POAC SE Director

Updated 8/21

The ballots for your national director have arrived in the mail. Each vote is very important. It only takes one vote to make a difference since it is not a majority vote count but an actual vote count.

I had not planned to put my bio on my web page but I do not use POA talk or POA breeders where the other candidate is getting public attention. Those 2 chat lines are a little too opinionated for me and never to seem to say anything nice. So I am going to use this web page. Read below:

I have been the Southeast Director for the past 3 years and would be honored to serve another 3 years as your director. As your director I have tried very hard to vote what was best for the SE Region, for POAC, and the POAC youth. When voting you have to leave your personal preferences behind. This is a business in my opinion and it needs to be treated as such. As a BOD you can not be in it for what you can gain personally. That is not what this is about.

The main thing that needs to happen in POAC is consistency within the organization and that is in two parts.  The consistency starts with the rule book and it must be followed by the entire BOD and membership.  The second part of the consistency with our organization is hiring a new executive secretary.  The next issue that needs to be addressed is growth.  There are parts of the country that are populated well with POA’s and then there are parts that have very few if any.  The big events, especially the sale, need to be rotated throughout the country so that other areas can grow as well.   The POA breed is unique and this breed needs promotion to the fullest.  We need to promote POA for more than just a show pony. POA's have so much more to offer. We must not forget that this is a membership club and most important it is a youth club.  It is all about the youth and with out them what would we have?

If re-elected I will continue keeping the Southeast region informed of what is going on regionally as well as nationally through this web site.  I will continue to vote for the good of the region, POAC, and not for me personally.  You may read where I am being persuaded by others with my vote. I do not feel that I am or have been persuaded by anyone. It is ok to "agree to disagree" when you are in meetings. That is what I teach my students in the classroom. I believe my involvement and dedication with my career, youth in general, other horse organizations, and POAC, that I can have the perspective that is needed for this job.  POAC is a business and needs to be treated as such.  Our organization has rules and by-laws and we have them for a reason.  These rules and by-laws need to be followed to maintain consistency in our organization. Now About Me Personally.

My husband and I live in Murfreesboro, TN and we have two children, Ryan who was rode POAs for just a short time and Jessica, who has ridden and shown for the past 14 years and will be heading off to college in August.

It has been a wonderful and fulfilling time traveling with Jessica and her ponies all over the South, East, Midwest, Mideast and the Northeast.  During our travels Jessica has supremed two ponies and was the 2001 8 & under National Equitation Rider, 2005 9-12 National Equitational Rider and was the 2007 13018 reserve national Equitational Rider. We may not have been in POA's as long as others but we have shown a lot over these 14 years, met a lot of people, and learned a lot about the breed. I am one of those people that come up to you at 4H and ask about your spotted pony and see if it is registered and tell them all about POA and how to join. Not only has Jessica shown POA's I have too. I basicly show in halter where I have put ROMH on several ponies and won small halter geldings under all 3 judges one year! Last year I rode more and was the Reserve National 19 & over rider. So we have done a lot as a family with POA.

Prior to being the Southeast Director, I had served as the TNPOAC president for 5 years.  During that time our membership grew as well as the POA population in TN.  Before being an officer in the TNPOAC, I had served as vice president, secretary, and treasurer for two local saddle clubs in the state of TN.  Presently I am still involved in numerous horse ventures other than POAC.  I am the point secretary for the TNPOAC and have been for the past 3 years.  I am currently announcing for two other horse organizations including TN APHA as well as being their youth director.  My next challenge is to apply for my POA and Ranch Horse judge’s cards.

I have been teaching for 23 years with a master’s degree in home economics and a second master’s in special education.  A teacher is always visible in the eye of the public.  Teachers have to set a standard for the young people that they work so closely with.  A teacher has to keep up with lots of paperwork, stay organized and focused, as well as speaking with parents, and sitting in on meetings.  I do believe that these qualities are essential to be a successful teacher and to be a national director of the POAC.  I feel that I bring these qualities with me as well as the ability to listen to what people have to say and actually hear what they are saying.

I ask the Southeast region for their support in electing me as the National Southeast Director.

Sincerely, Sheila Bennett

Southeast Regional 2010

Was great!

The Silent Auction was another big success and the lead liners really liked the oversize horse they received as their highpoint!

Thank you TN and AL for a wonderful show. Duane thank you for the inspectors clinic. Highpoints from the regional are listed on the points page.

Thank you to all of the sponsors.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally THANK each and every member of the TNPOAC that pitched-in and helped make the 2010 S.E. Regional run smoothly and successfully.

I know that it was HOT and HUMID and we all sweated our butts off, but with everyone helping out a little here and there, no one person was "too" overworked. (I hope) Without each of you, this show wouldn't have happened so THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!!!!! It was appreciated.

It is with disappointment that I inform the SE region that Memphis did not receive the bid for the 2011-2013 International. Memphis had a wonderful bid proposal as well as great presentation. We all need to work together to get the sale and the Eastern Classic in our region.

TN 4H district/regional updates are on the points page. More are coming.

TN State 4H results are on the points page. As usual the POA's ruled the pony divisions. They will be updated as they arrive.

I hope you find this web site useful for the South East region. You will find information about up and coming shows among our region. Click on show information for a list of shows in the SE area.

Please support your state POA shows and if you can, the surrounding states of our region. If any of you are planning on attending any open shows or 4H shows, be sure to look for other POA's. Go up, introduce yourself, and let them know they have a POA. Then let them know all about POA's, how to join, and become part of the POA family. Also remember if you show open shows that you can complete an open show affidavit and qualify for points and a national year end award.

Cowboy Bronze has filed papers to go ahead with the lawsuit against POAC. I received copies of the notice at the end of May by way of email. This is still an ongoing case. There has been some discussion but still no final decisions have been made.

The POAC logo can not be used by anyone for financial gain. Any merchandise already made up may be sold, but nothing new. State clubs may use the logo for their year end awards. Also the POA logo is to be removed from POA talk.

The Image page is back up and working with new/old pictures. I hope to take new pictures at this years shows to update every couple of months.

DO NOT COPY OR EDIT any pictures that are professionally made. These pictures are copyrighted.

Don't forget to check out the classified section.

The 2011 National Convention will be held in Wisconsin. There are a few members complaining about the cost of the hotel room. I did ask and there are cheaper hotels across the street if interested. The other thing that the BOD considered was the children. We must remember that this is a youth organization and what would be good for them. This location should offer a lot for the young people and lots of skiing for the older group. The shuttle from the airport to the hotel will be free. The WI POA are the ones that will be sponsoring the convention. WI is a large POA club and are very excited about putting this on. More information will be presented in the next few weeks.

There was a request for a regional club in the Southeast region. As your director, I informed the BOD of the views of the current states this would affect. Letters from each state was requested.

Reichert Celebration Dates are August 6-8, 2010. yes this will be a huge promotion for the POAC. Yes this will not cost the POAC any money. Reichert takes care of everything. POA just shows up to show. There will be added money and futurity classes for the 19 & Over. There will be a $100 stall fee, $10 pony fee, $40 camping fee. there will be a youth tournament. Entry fees will be $45- $50 per judge and this will be all day fees. There will be 3 sets of "A" points and one set of overall points tabulated like a regional. I abstained from this vote. This is a wonderful situation for the POAC and hopefully a big promotion as well. My concerns for this show that in the south youth are returning to school and this is when the SE regional 4H show is going on and this makes 2 shows in the western part of the country where the eastern part of the country has only 1.

I have added a classified tab to this website. This is a free advertisement for all ponies in the South Eastern Region only. Once you send me a classified notice, be kind and also let me know once the pony is sold.

Please be advised.........An issue that has come about is breeding to AQHA/APHA stallions. Be sure you know the stallion's pedigree before breeding. Resources have stated the new AQHA papers are now stating the stallions are doubled registered. If the stallion is registered as an APHA stallion the foals are not eligible to be registered as a POA. Be sure to ask the stallion owner point blank if there is any paint registry.

As always, "buyer beware". POA is a breed that is based upon color. You may have 2 registered POA parents, but if the foal does not color you only have a pony, not a showable POA. If it is a mare, you may receive breeding stock papers where she can be used as a broodmare. If in doubt about a pony talk to several people before purchasing the pony. In regards to color issues new rules are being put into place effect 1/1/2010

As your SE director, I am here to serve you as a region; not for myself or for a select few.
